Personalized Consultation with Individuals and Couples

We help individuals and couples explore matters of money and meaning, a subject that is often taboo even among the closest of intimates. We help clients, their spouses, and other intimates deal with issues of self-esteem, trust, resentment, jealousy, and competition. We work toward understanding our clients' values and goals, with the aim of composing an action plan that details the choices and changes clients want to make, personally, professionally, and socially.

In confidential sessions tailored to the client's needs, we provide services for individuals, and for small groups of client-selected participants: family members, business partners, siblings, parents, or friends. Our aim is to assist the client in finding ways of being comfortable with his or her financial position without distancing those who matter most.

We will:

  • Assess the client's strengths and vulnerabilities in the domains of Self, Relationships, Work, and Community, producing a profile of the life areas in which the client has been over-involved, as well as those areas in need of attention. For some this may mean paying more time and attention to self-caring or relationship issues; for others it may mean becoming more meaningfully involved in philanthropy or social activism.

  • Explore how attitudes about money from the client's (and spouse's or partner's) family of origin affect current feelings.

  • Discuss how to best confront and resolve emotional conflicts about money with friends and family.

  • Review the strategies that the client has already tried to reach his or her goals, and help the client determine which strategies and involvements have worked and which have not.

Our consultation process pays equal attention to both the powerful emotional issues and the opportunities that accompany inheritance and/or financial success, including how to use resources most effectively in the larger community.

While acknowledging the value of "checkbook philanthropy," we believe that the experience of giving can be more meaningful and satisfying when people have a degree of personal involvement in a charitable project. We therefore help clients sort out the range of opportunities and focus on finding involvements that are tailored to their unique personal needs.
